Sponsorship Listing a Better Deal than Google Adwords!

Recently, a vendor inquired how many clicks their Preferred Listing received. By way of answering that question, I found it useful to compare a listing in the Pharma marketing Vendor Directory with the purchase of AdWords via Google, which is another way that vendors often advertise.

Let's look at some statistics for the Market Research Vendor Page.

That page was viewed 3658 times this year to date. That means a vendor with a Preferred Listing (top of page) on that page receives about 7,300 views per year (this increases evey year). At the current rate of $149.95 per year for a Preferred Listing, that equates to less than $0.02 per view!

Pretty Good!

Of course, people have to click on the vendor name to view the listing and then either click again on the listed URL to visit the vendor's Web site or click on the email link in the listing to send an email message. That email link, BTW, will insert the words "PMN Vendor Directory Query:" in the subject line of email messages sent to the vendor (unless the sender deletes the words), which is something you can measure if you retain these emails.

A much more cost-effective and competitive option would be to purchase a Category Sponsor Listing on this page, which includes everything that a Preferred Listing offers, plus a standard size (468x60 pixel) banner ad at the top of the page.

One click on that ad brings the user directly to a page on the vendor's site. That can be a special landing page designed only for clickthroughs from this sponsorship ad. By looking at how many times that page was viewed, you can get an accurate measurement of the clickthrough rate for your sponsored ad.

Here's a sample analysis.

A Vendor Directory Sponsorship costs $295 for a year (current 2007 price; click here for an updated price). For an ad on the Market Research Vendor Page, that's about $0.04 per view.

Because the ad appears on a very targeted page -- only includes information about market research vendors -- and because it is a graphical ad rather than a text-only ad, we can safely assume that at least 2% to 3% of people who visit the page will click on the ad. That's about the same response rate as direct mail or email ads.

That works out to about $2.02 per click.

That's about what I pay per click using Google's textual AdWords!

I'm not saying that you get a Sponsored Listing in the Pharma Marketing Vendor Directory INSTEAD of using Google AdWords. I'm saying that a Sponsored Listing will give you the same bang for your buck and should be part of your online marketing mix.

Your results may vary on other listing pages that are not as popular as the Market Research page. But consider this. You can have a Preferred Listing on one page and a banner on another page and pay the same Sponsored Listing rate ($295) as when the two are on the same page! That gives you a top listing on 2 pages for the price of one!
